Because viruses have few specific enzymes and replicate by modifying the metabolism of infected cells so that the cells synthesize new viral nucleic acid and protein for assembly into virus particles, compounds which are effective against viruses but do not damage cellular metabolism are rare. Most potential viricides are screened in tissue culture but the targets are generally those which cause disease in man. This interesting article gives a brief account of some products which are at present available or are being investigated.
