The pathogenic difference and the activity of certain enzymes were studied in 119 patients with nonocclusional ischemic apoplectic strokes (63 males and 56 females). On the basis of the pathogenesis, clinical course and results of biochemical findings, the apoplectic strokes without thrombus formation were divided into 3 types: those caused by cerebral angiospasm; by metabolic disturbances and by angioparesis. Biochemical investigations revealed that irrespective of the type of apoplexy, the total activity of certain dehydrogenases in the blood (LDH , glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase) was inhibited. The data on LDH3 and LDH4+5 should be used for the prognosis of apoplectic strokes depending on the degree of cerebral circulation disturbances and the clinical course of the disease.
