Basal level of prolactin in patients with hypogonadism

The level of prolactin in the blood was examined by radioimmunoassay in 18 patients with male hypogonadism and in 11 healthy persons. In patients with primary hypogonadism, particularly after puberty, prolactin levels rose while in secondary hypogonadism basal levels of prolactin decreased. In receptor hypogonadism these levels were within normal limits. The changes of prolactin content are essentially related to the severity of manifestations of hypogonadism.
