Comparison of intramuscular and oral modified-live virus TGE vaccines

Commercial, modified-live virus vaccines for transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) were given intramuscularly and orally to pregnant sows. One group was vaccinated orally with vaccine intended for intramuscular use. After farrowing, pigs from vaccinated and control sows were challenged with virulent TGE. Intramuscular vaccine given according to the manufacturer's recommendations more effectively protected pigs and sows against infection than did orally administered products. Intramuscular and oral TGE vaccines showed similar antigenic potential when given by the recommended route. In cross-neutralization assays, the vaccines were found tobe antigenically related.
