Ingestion of a tablet containing 0.5 mg of prostaglandin [PG] E2 (Prostin E2) causing uterine contractions within 30-60 min after ingestion determines the patient's uterine contractive sensitivity to oxytocin at the level of 20-30 mU/min. Uterine contractive readiness is shown if regular contractions appear after 30-60 min. If this does not occur, the uterine sensitivity to oxytocin is higher than 40 mU/min. Ingestion of 1 tablet of PG (or of 2 tablets 1 h later if contractions do not appear after the 1st dose) serves as a practical PG test, which may be interpreted on the basis of the long used i.v. oxytocin tests. To increase the efficacity and safety of labor induction by PG the uterine readiness for labor must be determined earlier with the use of PG or oxytocin tests.
