Neonatal course of coagulation parameters

A systematic study of hemostasis in 168 human newborns and a drawing up of normograms concerned with the evolution of blood clotting factors was done. Standards were established within the first 17 days of life from 5 hematologic screening tests, including platelet count, assays of fibrinogen, proaccelerin, prothrombin-proconvertin-Stuart complex and determination of the partial thromboplastin time. The 168 newborns were distributed in several groups, including term, premature, hypotrophic and caesarean-born infants. These groups were studied by a comparative statistical method to look for eventual differences. Ten normograms were established which allow an evaluation of the hemostatic factors studied in the great majority of these newborns within the considered period.
