Medical practitioners on the East Rand and graduates of the year 1979 from 2 medical schools in the Transvaal, South Africa completed a questionnaire on the fluoridation of drinking water. Of the 94.9% who responded, 78.4% supported fluoridation, 7.2% did not, 13.4% were doubtful and 1% did not answer. Most had no formal education on the subject as undergraduates and 94.8% of practitioners had not attended postgraduate courses on the subject. Adequate medical undergraduate or postgraduate education on fluoridation of water, as well as on oral health, was necessary.
