Levels of glutamate, GABA, glutamine, aspartate, histidine and asparagine were estimated up to 4 days in the brains of mice infected intranasally with a virulent strain of Acanthamoeba culbertsoni. There was a marked decrease in the glutamate level, with no concomitant increase in the GABA level. Under these experimental conditions there was a tremendous increase in glutamic acid decarboxylase activity; the level of glutamate dehydrogenase, GOT in the infected brains decreased.
