Of a population of 450 patients suffering from classic or common migraine attacks, 16 also presented epileptic seizures and 10 showed EEG changes typical of epilepsy, i.e., diffuse or localized spikes or spike-and-waves, with no clinical manifestations of an epileptic nature. Four patient groups differentiated according to type of attack: intercalated attacks; combined attacks; associated attacks; and migraine attacks and EEG changes of an epileptic nature. In the 1st group, interaction of distinct neurophysiological mechanisms responsible for the 2 types of attacks was likely to occur. In the 2nd group each type of crisis played a trigger role on the other. In the 3rd group, the 2 diseases behaved as 2 independent conditions. The 4th group showed a fortuitous association of genetic traits responsible for migraine and epilepsy-like EEG recordings.
