I.v. infusions of angiotensin II (A II) in doses of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 ng/kg per min induced graded increases of the lower esophageal sphincter pressure (LESP) in healthy subjects. The effect of A II on LESP was not antagonized by i.v. administration of an atropine bolus. A II may act directly on the specific receptor in the LES and indirectly via the adrenergic nervous system.
