The expression of HLA-A and -B antigens on acute leukemia cells was investigated. In 20 cases, HLA phenotypes on leukemia cells were compared with those on lymphocytes in remission by means of complement dependent microcytotoxicity test and indirect membrane immunofluorescent test. The HLA phenotypes of leukemia cells were classified into 3 types: loss type, extra type and normal type, compared to those of lymphocytes in remission. In 3 of 20 cases, some HLA antigens which were expressed on lymphocytes in remission were not expressed on leukemia cells. In 14 cases, anomalous extra reactions of HLA typing sera to leukemia cells were observed. Eleven cases expressed extra HLA-A and -B antigens on leukemia cells which their lymphocytes in remission did not possess. A few extra reactions to leukemia cells were due to non-HLA-A and -B antibodies involved in HLA typing sera.
