Immunologic response of mice to influenza virus strains with different neuraminidase activity

Two groups of Swiss albino mice were inoculated i.p. with influenza viruses (H3N2) in doses identical in hemagglutinin (HA) activity (800/0.5 ml) but differing in neuraminidase (N) activity. The N activity of A/Pol/R/73 virus (close to A/Port Chalmers/73) was 10.74 .times. 10-4 U/ml and that of A/Scotland/840/74 virus was 8.94 .times. 10-4 U/ml. N activity had an effect on anti-N and anti-HA antibody levels but it had no influence on cell mediated response as measured by the spleen leukocyte migration inhibition test.
