Gastroscopic examinations, polyps were histologically confirmed in 112 cases, 190 cases presented with atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia and stomach cancer was recorded in 102 cases with intramucosal localization in 9 of them. In agricultural workers stomach cancer occurred at a higher age than in other occupational groups (P < 0.01). In the group of 42 patients with xanthomas in the gastric mucosa, a simultaneous risk condition was present in 47%. Carcinoma was detected in 23% (12) in the stumps following resection for gastric/duodenal ulcer. Long-term follow-up of patients with xanthomas and of postresection conditions (10 yr ofllowing surgery) is being advocated. Forty-two different parameters (regimens and dietary habits) were studied in patients with stomach cancer and in patients without this disease by using the cybernetic method of pattern recognition. Consumption of garlic, onion, homemeade smoked meat, as well as persistent emotional stress had the highest degree of relationship to cancer. Restriction of overdone food and high consumption of vegeteables and fruit appear to be beneficial against cancer.
