Tissue pressure was recorded by the use of a wick-catheter, and edema was quantitated by wet weight-dry weight method in monkeys [Macaca radiata] in which ischemia was produced by coagulation and division of right middle cerebral artery through a transorbital approach. A consistent increase in tissue pressure was recorded in the ischemic cortex, white matter and the basal ganglia over 12 h, following coagulation of right middle cerebral artery. There was a corresponding increase in the edema as well. The significance of this increase in tissue pressure in relation to edema is discussed.
