Calves were experimentally infected with various gastro-intestinal nematodes and treated with fenbendazole at 5 mg/kg body-weight when the parasites were expected to be in the 3rd, 4th or adult stages of development. Worm counts at autopsy of the treated and control animals showed that, with one exception, the drug was >80% effective in >80% of the animals (classification A) against all stages of Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia spp., Oesophagostomum radiatum and Bunostomum phlebotomum. The exception was 3rd-stage B. phlebotomum against which the efficacy of the drug was rated classification B (> 60% effective in > 60% of animals). Data from trials using higher doses of fenbendazole (7.5 and 10 mg/kg) are provided for comparison.
