Variability in in vitro neutralising capacity and cost efficiency ratio of liquid antacids

The in vitro neutralizing capacity of 15 commercially available liquid antacids [Acinil, Aludrox, Aludrox MH, Catoxymag, Cogel, Digene, Diovol, Gelusil, Gelusil MPS, Logascid, Muscaine, Polycrol Forte, Siloxagene, Simeco and Zymets] ranged from 99 .+-. 12 to 444 .+-. 21 meq/l. There was also a more than 3-fold difference in the efficiency-cost ratio of the antacids. There was no significant intra or inter-batch variations and the antacids were stable for up to 475 days after opening the bottle. Methods are advocated for less expensive and effective antacids.
