Using combined data for 9 blood group and 4 biochemical polymorphic systems, exclusion probabilities were calculated for over 500 dogs belonging to 7 of the most popular breeds. In cases where 1 parent was incorrectly identified, exclusion probabilities ranged from 0.59 to 0.66 when 1 pup was available for typing, and from 0.82 to 0.88 when 5 pups were available; they ranged from 0.79 to 0.84 where both parents had been incorrectly identified and 1 pup was available for typing. Reference is made to 17 cases of doubtful parentage tested in veterinary practices. The results obtained accorded well with theoretical expectation.
