Lysogeny of Bacillus cultures isolated from various natural sources

Lysogenic Bacillus cultures are widely distributed in nature. They release spontaneously into the environment .apprx. 10% of the mature phage particles as related to the number of viable bacteria. Cross studies and UV induction showed that 139 of 247 Bacillus cultures isolated from soils, sewage and plant substrates produced temperate phages; 11 strains were polylysogenic. Phages isolated from different lysogenic strains of B. cereus, B. thuringiensis, B. subtilis, B. mesentericus and B. megaterium differ in plaque morphology on different indicator cultures and in virion morphology and were characterized by a pronounced species specificity.
