Current methods of treating acute gouty arthritis

The results of treatment of 65 gouty arthritis patients who showed acute intermittent gouty arthritis or exacerbation of chronic gouty arthritis are described. Administration of antiinflammatory drugs of the indole or pyrazolone series in conjunction with applications of dimethylsulfoxide to the affected joints was the most effective method. The treatment was combined with administration of uricodepressant agents (e.g., allopurinol). The dosage was indicated by the intensity of hyperuricemia. Gouty arthritis was treated with due regard for concomitant diseases.
