Acute fatal toxoplasmosis in squirrels

Two dead Sciurus carolinensis from the USA (Connecticut and New Jersey) were found to have had non-suppurative encephalitis and interstitial pneumonitis, with Toxoplasma gondii cysts and tachyzoites in many tissues. One of the squirrels had showed neurological signs mimicking rabies.
