Potentialities of bronchoscopy in the diagnosis of exudative pleurisy

Bronchoscopic investigations were carried out on 139 patients suffering from exudative pleurisy without visible changes in the lungs and in 76 persons with simultaneous involvement of the lungs and pleura. In 43 patients this was tuberculosis; in 18 malignant neoplasms; and in 15, acute pneumonia. In 63.5%, bronchoscopy established bronchial pathology accompanying pleural changes. Bronchoscopy established the cause of pleurisy in 19.5% and established its diagnosis in 22.8%. Exudative pleurisy of unclear nature is an indication for bronchoscopy.
