Enterotoxigenic E. coli isolated from the fecal samples of infants with acute diarrheal diseases showed the presence of colonization factor antigen [CFA] I or CFA II as checked by mannose resistant hemagglutination of human group A, bovine and chicken erythrocytes or bovine and chicken erythrocytes only; the non-enterotoxigenic strains had type I pili. These enterotoxigenic strains showed mannose resistant adherence to human buccal cells in vitro. Non-enterotoxigenic strains did not show much adherence as compared to the enterotoxigenic strains. These 2 simple in vitro tests evidently can be used for screening large number of E. coli strains isolated from diarrhea cases.
