Immunologic disorders in ankylosing spondylitis

Disorders of humoral and cellular immunity were studied in 90 patients with ankylosing spondylitis. In the active disease stage, IgG and IgA levels rose in almost 1/2 the patients. The levels of antistreptolysin-O and antistaphylolysin were significantly increased, the level of the latter correlating with disease severity. There was a significant derangement of the cellular component of immunity. The index of lymphocyte stimulation by PHA and concanavalin A was lower than in controls. The addition of autologous serum made these indices return to normal. The data indicate the enhancement of humoral immune response and a decrease in cellular response in ankylosing spondylitis.
