In A. castellanii the precursor of the microexudates which are released into the culture medium can be separated into 4 fractions on the basis of their solubility in ethanol and 0.1M acetic acid. One of these fractions contains a growth inhibitor which is normally neutralized by the other components of the microexudate precursor. When the inhibitory component is separated and added to the culture medium, it produces the maximum effect at low cell densities and on cells growing on agarose as opposed to high cell densities and cells growing on silica-coated glass.
