Effect of alpha/beta blockers on serum lipids

The effect of an oral alpha/beta blocker on serum lipids was studied over a 6-month period of administration to patients with essential hypertension. Serum free fatty acid level was lower after 1 month than initially but not after 3 and 6 months. There were no significant changes in the concentrations of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol or in the ratio of HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol during therapy. Serum triglycerides increased from 1.9 +/- 1.1 mmol/1 to 2.6 +/- 1.5 mmol/1 at 3 months and to 2.5 +/- 1.6 mmol/1 at 6 months, but this increase was significant only at 3 months (p less than 0.05).
