Positron annihilation lifetimes were measured in .alpha.-amylase and trypsin as a function of pH of the buffer solutions containing these enzymes. Two positron lifetime components, .tau.1 and .tau.2, were observed. These are found to be sensitive to the pH of the enzymes system. In both the enzyme systems, the 2 lifetime components show a maximum value at a pH of about 7.5. This PH value is close to the reported optimum pH for the bioreactivity of these enzymes, thus suggesting association of an electron withdrawing property with the bioreactivity of the enzymes.
