The mechanism of ionic transport was clarified in the perfused dog submandibular gland. Ionic flow rates were studied by measuring the changes in the ionic concentration, venous perfusate and the perfusion flow rate during stimulation of the chordalingual nerve. Devices were used for measuring increases in O2 solubility in the perfusate and the inhibition of ionic reabsorption in the ductal system. Na+ and K+ concentrations in the venous perfusate were observed during gland stimulation. Outflux was studied in the resting state and under the influence of atropine and ouabain. K+ and Na+ conductance on the basal plasma membrane of the acinar cell were calculated.
