Perinatal mortality in 91 patients with abruptio placentae was 65.93%. The highest percentage (51.65) was for stillborn infants. Neonatal mortality was 14.28%; the leading causes were respiratory distress and multiple malformations. The majority of the infants studies were prematures (weight from 1001-2500 g and gestational age, 29-36 wk). Thus, it was not surprising to find a high number of infants with respiratory problems, hypoxia being added to the organic condition of prematurity. Evidently with good prenatal care, close surveillance during labor, opportune cesarean section and intensive pediatric care, the rate of perinatal mortality due to abruptio placentae can be decreased.
