Various aspects of studies on the interactions of energy intake and body protein metabolism are discussed, with particular reference to the use of stable amino acid isotope tracers (e.g., radiolabelled-leucine). These studies demonstrate the value of various stable isotope tracers for investigating the dynamics of amino acid and protein metabolism in man. The use of non-radioactive chemical probes and relatively short constant-infusion experiments permit investigations of currently unanswered questions concerning the interactions of various specific amino acids with protein (as well as non-protein) energy sources in a variety of population types (especially, growing children). Such investigations were not previously amenable to radiotracer studies. Data derived from such studies are described and assessed. (wlz)
