Influence of pentoxifylline on glycometabolic balance in diabetic subjects

The action of pentoxifylline, a phosphodiesterase antagonist, on cAMP-receptor efficiency-dependent pancreatic function was examined in 10 patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, aged 33-67 yr. Blood glucose, plasma insulin and glucagon radioimmunoassay after an oral glucose load (100 g) or glucose + pentoxifylline (800 mg, orally) were assayed. Neither blood glucose nor plasma insulin or glucagon were significantly different after the 2 loading tests. Pentoxifylline in therapeutic oral doses apparently is devoid of pharmacological action on carbohydrate metabolism.
