In a retrospective analysis of 1000 diabetic patients attending an out-patient clinic, hypertension was present in 26.4%. There was a female preponderance in the overall group and the male:female ratio was similar in the subgroup with hypertension. The incidence of hypertension increased with age. The hypertensive and normotensive diabetics were similar in regard to weight distribution and cholesterol levels. There was a relatively higher frequency of ischemic heart disease and small vessel disease among diabetics with hypertension. The overall contribution of diabetic renal disease to the prevalence of hypertension was unimpressive. Hypertension was mild in a vast majority of patients.
