Isolated stigmata of light grown cells of E. gracilis strain Z were solubilized by a zwitterionic surfactant. The resulting extract was fractionated by gel filtration and 2 fractions were obtained. These were examined for the presence of carotenoproteins and nucleic acids using the techniques of UV/visible spectroscopy, TLC and isoelectrofocusing. DNA but not RNA was present in the high MW fraction, while carotenoid pigments were present in the low MW fraction but were not in stoichiometric combination with protein.
