HEp2 cell line, obtained from a human retrobuccal carcinoma, was incubated in a culture medium with prostaglandin[PG]F2.alpha. and 15(S)15-methyl-PGF2.alpha. While PGF2.alpha. was inefficacious, its methylated derivative caused a block of the multiplication and a decrease of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis. The block was of a nontoxic nature for the cells; after the removal of 15(S)15-methyl-PGF2.alpha. they again multiplied and synthesized in a similar way to control cells.
