Isolation of rabies virus from common hamster (Cricetus cricetus) in Czechoslovakia

Experiments were conducted in 1972-1973 on 283 carcasses of the common hamster collected from 7 localities of eastern Slovakia, Czechoslovakia, in order to clarify the role of the hamster in the ecology of the rabies virus. Rabies antigen was isolated in 5 of the 283 hamster carcasses using direct immunofluorescence; a bioprobe test on suckling mice succeeded in isolating only 3 virus strains (3O, 7E, 9E). A comparable study was made with 196 carcasses of the common mole (Talpa europaea) but the results proved negative.
