Actual and reserve fibrinolytic activity in the postoperative period--possibility of exhaustion of the reserve of vascular plasminogen activator

Investigations were carried out in the preoperative period and on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 8th days after operations on the abdominal cavity in patients aged over 40 yr with high risk of thrombosis. The actual and reserve was determined histologically in the walls of arteries and veins taken from the abdominal organs. Venous thrombosis developing in 32% of the patients was diagnosed after radioisotope investigations using 125I fibrinogen. Before the operation the acutal and the reserve FA were normal, but they decreased within the first 5 days after the operation. This decrease was associated with a rise in the blood level of fibrinogen and FDP, which was more pronounced in the group with venous thrombosis. A correlation was found between the values of PA determined in the walls of arteries and veins, with the value of the PA in venus walls twice as high as in the arteries. The tendency for thrombosis development can be related to the fall in reserve FA, appearing already on the day after the operation.
