High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was measured in 2363 men aged 40-55 yr who attended a cardiovascular screening visit as a part of a prospective epidemiologic survey. In multivariate analyses HDL-cholesterol and the ratio of HDL to total cholesterol were inversely related to triglycerides, body mass index, cigarette smoking and directly related to systolic blood pressure, educational level and socio-professional class. Of the variances of both factors, respectively 17 and 32% were accounted for by these variables. No relation was found between indices of physical activity on the job and during leisure, objective measures of physical capacity and HDL-cholesterol or the HDL/total cholesterol ratio. No difference was found in HDL-cholesterol or HDL/total cholesterol ratio between those suspected of having coronary heart disease and the apparently normal subjects.
