A laboratory study was carried out in India on the cytomorphology of the neurosecretory cells in the frontal ganglion of Achaea janata (L.) collected from castor and Samia cynthia ricini (Boisd.) (Philosamia ricini) from a laboratory population, using the PF, PARF and PAVB techniques. In the frontal ganglion of both species, 2-3 conspicuous oval A-cells staining deep purple and a number of B-cells staining green were clearly observed. The A-cells were located either in the centre of or close to the root of the recurrent nerve, or close to the frontal ganglion connective. Both types of cells showed a distinct cyclic change during larval development. The results demonstrated the neuroendocrine nature of the frontal ganglion in species of Lepidoptera.
