To determine the echocardiographic criteria which predict the type of surgery necessary in mitral stenosis, 27 patients who underwent surgical correction for mitral disease were studied. Three echocardiographic criteria appeared: the amplitude DE depending on whether it was lower, higher or equal to 18 mm; a valve appearing calcified on the tracing; and the state of the subvalvular structures during scanning of the left ventricle. These criteria defined 2 groups of patients: those possessing 2 or 3 criteria, candidates for valvular replacement in 18 of 19 cases; and those with 1 or no criteria, who were candidates for commissurotomy with closed heart in 7 of 8 cases.
