Patients (53) with mitral stenosis aged 17-28 yr were examined. Echocardiography made it possible to evaluate structural and functional disturbances during mitral stenosis. On the basis of a complex of echocardiographic signs, it was possible to reach a reliable diagnosis of mitral stenosis and to determine the degree of narrowing of the orifice. Echocardiographic signs of restoration of the mobility of the mitral cusp indicated the adequacy of the commissurotomy. Echocardiography made it possible to diagnose mitral valve calcinosis.
