The spectrum of host immune responses provoked by intracellular parasites, such as Trypanosoma cruzi, Toxoplasma and Leishmania, allows the recognition of 2 main groups of granulomata: hyperergic (hypersensitivity) granulomata and hypoergic (hyposensitivity)-anergic granulomata. The most important difference between the 2 groups of granulomata is the presence or absence of immunologically-mediated macrophage activation. Several types of granulomata are recognized within the 2 main groups. A form of hyperergic granuloma described as empty macrophage granuloma is associated with a form of cutaneous leishmaniasis found in Ethiopia.
