A report on the occurrence of epididymis aplasia (Aplasia segmentalis Ductus Wolffii) in young Friesian bulls at the examination for breeding capability

In the examination of 20 044 bulls for breeding capability between 1960 and 1979, 872 (4.35%) were found to be unfit for breeding, 415 of these because of defects in testis and epididymis. Uni- or bilateral aplasia of the epididymis was found in 113 bulls, the incidence increasing from 3.4% in 1960-1964, to 13.2% in 1965-1974 and 15.9% in 1975-1979. Morphological and spermatological findings in one 14-month-old bull are described in detail. Detailed examination of blood lines of bulls with epididymal aplasia are planned in order to investigate aetiology, in view of possible genetic predisposition.
