A double-blind controlled trial compared cimetidine (a single daily dose of 400 mg at bed time for a maximal duration of 12 mo.) to placebo in the prevention of duodenal ulcer relapses. Patients (52) of the cimetidine-group and 39 patients of the placebo-group were kept for analysis. Better results were obtained in the 1st group. Among the patients receiving cimetidine, the number of symptomatic relapses were significantly less (9 or 17.3% as compared to 27 or 69.2% P < 0.001), the delay of recurrence was longer (7.7 mo. as compared to 4.3: P < 0.001), and the actuarial rate of asymptomatic patients was higher (77.5% as compared to 23.5%: P < 0.0001). Relapses were revealed by complications in 1 patient of the cimetidine-group and in 3 patients of the placebo-group. Asymptomatic relapses were not studied.
