Maize is the staple food in rural Guatemala and is eaten as tortillas to provide at least half the total energy intake. Differences in the size of tortillas cause difficulty in estimating the intake of maize during dietary surveys. In the present 3 studies with 118 families the variations in weight of tortillas between families, between days of the week, within families between days, and within families within days, were noted. Weight of a tortilla was 19.6 to 94.4, mean 45.7 g.
