Changes in electrolyte composition in different tissues of the frog Rana hexadactyla (Lesson) during denervation atrophy

The effect of surgical denervation of the gastrocnemius muscle on ionic composition and water content in various tissues of the frog, R. hexadactyla was studied. Water content did not change considerably. Na+ content increased in muscle, brain and liver tissues, while there was a decrease in kidney tissue. K+ content decreased in denervated muscle and kidney; unaltered in brain and increased in liver. Ca2+ level rose in all tissues as a function of denervation. The changes in ionic composition are discussed with reference to membrane permeability, increased level of vascular transport and adaptation towards homeostasis during the progression of atrophy.
