Senior dietetic students participated in a program to provide nutritional counseling to pregnant women in private physicians' offices and to gain work experience in the field. Training sessions were provided for the 7 students; counseling sessions with patients were arranged by the students within the framework of office procedures. Each patient was seen at least 3 times, as early in pregnancy as possible, receiving information on eating patterns, weight gain, nutritional values of food, and nutritional needs in pregnancy. Response to the program was favorable: physicians were supportive and interested in continuing; students performed very well and appreciated the experience; and patients showed improved dietary habits and appreciation for the personal interest.
