There were 104 children observed. The clinical course of the disease was typical of staphylococcal enterocolitis. Staphylococci were isolated from the feces in all cases. Strains-producers of enterotoxin B (36.5%) were revealed by Ouchterlony microprecipitation method; 32 were Staphylococcus aureus and 6 were S. epidermidis. The clinical picture of enterocolitis caused by enterotoxigenic S. epidermidis strains was not milder than that caused by enterotoxigenic S. aureus cultures. Establishment of enterotoxigenic activity in 36.5% of staphylococcal cultures isolated from children with enterocolitis and a serious clinical picture caused by enterotoxigenic S. epidermidis strains pointed to the role played by enterotoxin in the pathogenesis of enterocolitis in children. S. epidermidis capacity to produce enterotoxin apparently should be taken into consideration in laboratory diagnosis. Enterotoxigenic staphylococci possessed a greater biological activity than nonenterotoxigenic strains.
