A total of 708 rectal swabs from different laboratory animals (mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, hamster and monkey) of the central animal house in the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, India, were examined for the presence of pathogenic bacteria. Twenty four isolates of salmonellae (S. typhimurium, S. enteritidis and S. weltevreden) were isolated in addition to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Citrobacter, Enterobacter and Streptococcus faecalis. Carriage of salmonellae in laboratory animals and its significance to public health problems [e.g., infection hazard for workers in contact with the animals] are discussed.
