Study of the effect of vasopressin on metabolism of catecholamines and serotonin and on behavior showed that diabetes insipidus is genetically determined and cannot be explained simply by a vasopressin deficiency. Heterozygotes not suffering from this condition differed from animals of other groups with respect to transmitter content. Oxytocin plays a role in noradrenergic and serotoninergic mechanisms in the brain. Peptide hormones acting directly on neuronal elements have an effect on brain function and simultaneously may affect the metabolism of specific neurotransmitters found in specific regions of the brain.
