Ipratropium bromide-effects on the eye

Ipratropium bromide eye drops were studied in general pharmacology and side effects on the rabbit eyes. The lowest concentration which produced complete mydriatic action was 0.5%, and the maximum duration of 2 days was produced by 2.0% concentration. Onset of mydriatic action seemed to be shorter at higher concentration, but variability of onset time was observed. The duration was longer at higher concentration. No difference was seen in duration of action on albino and pigmented rabbits, and no interference was observed by presence of serum atropinesterase. The duration of mydriasis seemed to be the same as atropine in the albino atropinesterase negative group at the same concentration. Conjunctival injection was observed after instillation of eye drop. It was the same as atropine, but in lesser severity. No significant change of the retina with i.v. or topical adminstration was detected by ERG measurement.
