Employees exposed to asbestos in a factory were studied. Investigation included radiographic examination of the lungs, measurement of forced expiratory volume, forced vital capacity and a comprehensive interview investigation of the working environment. Of 260 employees, asbestosis was found in 2 cases and these were notified and asbestosis was suspected in 8 other persons. Description of the smoking habits of these persons, their conditions of employment, pulmonary function, etc. corresponded to that of the population as a whole. The investigation could form the basis for the subsequent epidemiological control which the clinic for occupational medicine was required to undertake and it resulted in proposals for changes in the occupational environment.
